SIAH 4 Africa Design Competition
Back to SIAH-I news

This is the third workshop from a series of workshop on Sustainable Innovative Affordable Housing (SIAH) for Africa, funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering's Frontiers Champion Project.

Cape Town, like many cities in Sub-saharan Africa, is facing a housing problem. Despite the massive need for housing in the city, the supply of housing is insufficient across a number of the housing sub-markets. The presentation will explore why this is the case by looking at both the supply-side and demand-side challenges facing these markets. The presentation will also discuss how in some cases the problem is being addressed.

The main objectives of the presentation are to:

  • Outline the extent of the housing market problem.
  • Identify the main causes behind the housing market problem.
  • Illustrate how some of these causes are being addressed and how housing policies should be amended in this regard.
