SIAH 4 Africa Design Competition
Back to SIAH-I news

This is the fourth workshop from a series of workshop on Sustainable Innovative Affordable Housing (SIAH) for Africa, funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering's Frontiers Champion Project. This workshop aims to determine the importance of modern construction methods and innovative technologies on the sustainability and affordability of housing. A combination of acute housing demand and market failures in terms of cost, quantity, and quality forces the industry to look at modern construction methods and innovative technologies as a solution. Modern construction methods and innovative technologies have the potential to speed up delivery, improve productivity and modernise the sector. Such faith being placed on Modern construction methods and innovative technologies can be attributed to three key elements reflecting the three principles driving the sector deal: Performance, Manufacturing and Digitisation. However, the African construction industry, particularly housing projects, relies on conventional construction methods and traditional technologies. Therefore, it is essential to introduce modern construction methods and innovative technologies to the African housing stakeholders. Such enhancement will support the idea of developing SIAH for Africa.

The main objectives of this workshop are:

  • Introduce the appropriate modern construction methods and innovative technologies for housing projects such as prefabrication, modular, 3D printing, etc.
  • Discuss the pros and cons of modern construction methods and innovative technologies
  • Review the level of adoption of modern construction methods and innovative in the African construction industry, particularly in housing projects

While the expected outcome of this workshop is:

  • Enhance the knowledge of housing stakeholders, professional and policymakers on modern construction methods and innovative technologies
