This is the first workshop from a series of workshop on Sustainable Innovative Affordable Housing (SIAH) for Africa, funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering's Frontiers Champion Project. This workshop aims to review the existing affordable housing policies and finance schemes in Africa.Housing policy and finance playing critical roles in developing and delivery of affordable housing. There is a strong argue that the existing housing policies and finance schemes in Africa are not able to come up to rapid urbanisation rate and high demand for sustainable affordable housing in Africa. Therefore, it is essential to scrutinize the African affordable housing policies and finance schemes to determine their pros and cons and how can enhance these housing policies and finance schemes. Such enhancement will support the idea of developing SIAH for Africa and consequently improving the quality of life of African vulnerable communities.

The main objectives of this workshop are:

  • Recognise the leverage of housing policy and regulation on the delivery of sustainable affordable housing.
  • Examine the influence of existing housing finance scheme on the delivery of sustainable affordable house in Africa.

While the expected outcomes of this workshop are:

  • Evaluating existing African housing policies and regulations
  • Determine African housing policy incentives and barriers to developing sustainable innovative affordable housing
  • Evaluating existing housing financial programmes in Africa• Identify financial incentives and barriers to developing sustainable innovative affordable housing in Africa
  • Enhance the legal and policy knowledge of African housing stakeholders and experts
  • Enhance the financial knowledge of African housing stakeholders and experts
