Jan Wium qualified as a civil engineer from the University of Pretoria and obtained a PhD from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. He worked as a structural engineering consultant for 20 years before joining Stellenbosch in 2003 as a lecturer and researcher on structural concrete, structural dynamics and seismic behaviour of structures. Since 2010 he leads a research group in construction engineering and management and focusses on constructability, modern technology and construction risk.
